How European Removals Work Post-Brexit
Since January 2021, moving from the UK to any EU country is treated as an international export. Your belongings leave the UK under customs control and must be cleared through EU customs on arrival. That sounds complicated, but it is a process Alltranz handles on every European move we run.
The key relief available to most movers is Transfer of Residence. Under this framework, personal household goods can be imported into an EU country duty-free, provided you meet the qualifying conditions. Items must have been in your possession for more than six months, and you must be making a permanent or long-term move to your new EU address.
The documents you will typically need are:
Passport copy.
Proof of your UK address for the previous 12 months (utility bills or council tax statements).
Proof of your new EU address (rental contract or property purchase document).
Full valued and signed inventory. We draft this from the pre-move survey, you check and sign.
Non-cession certificate confirming the goods are for personal use and not for resale.
Requirements vary slightly by country. France, Spain, and Portugal each have their own customs agent requirements and transit documentation. Alltranz prepares the paperwork for the specific destination and flags any country-specific steps before the truck leaves Daventry.
Thousands of British families complete European moves every year under this framework. With the correct preparation, it is a straightforward process. We handle this paperwork on every move we run, so nothing comes as a surprise at the border.
Full Load or Part Load?
Choosing between a full load and a part load depends on the volume you are moving, how flexible you can be on the delivery date, and your budget.
Full Load
A dedicated vehicle carries only your goods. The truck loads at your UK address and delivers directly to your European address without consolidation stops. Delivery windows are tighter, typically two to three days for France and four to six days for Spain and Portugal. Best suited to families, larger homes, and moves with a fixed completion date.
Part Load
Your goods share trailer space with other consignments heading in the same direction. This makes it more cost-effective for smaller volumes, but delivery windows are wider because the trailer needs to fill and route to multiple stops. A part load to southern Spain or the Algarve can carry a 14-day delivery window.
A rough guide:
Three-bedroom home or larger: full load is usually the right call.
One or two-bedroom flat or apartment: a part load may work well and save money.
Not sure: call 01327 876007. Once we have the volume from the survey, the answer becomes straightforward.
Storage Bridging for European Moves
UK completions and European property handovers rarely land on the same day. When there is a gap between leaving your UK address and getting the keys to your European property, Alltranz stores your belongings at our Daventry depot in containerised, secure storage, short or medium term.
Once you have a confirmed move-in date, we load the truck and run the European leg. The whole job stays under one account, with no third-party handovers and no re-quoting. See our Storage Solutions page for full pricing detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need to pay customs duties when moving to Europe?
In most cases, no. If you qualify for Transfer of Residence relief, personal household items can be imported into your destination EU country duty-free. To qualify, items must have been in your possession for six months or more and you must be making a permanent or long-term move. Alltranz prepares the required documentation and confirms your eligibility before we load the truck.
Q: How long does a European removal take?
France takes one to three days for a full load. Spain and Portugal take three to six days for a full load, depending on the destination region. Part-load moves take longer because the trailer is consolidated along the route. We confirm your exact delivery window at quote stage so you can plan around it.
Q: How much does a European removal cost?
Cost depends on the volume you are moving, your destination, and whether you need a full load or a part load. There is no single published rate because every move is different. Call 01327 876007 or use the contact form to book a survey. The survey is free and the quote reflects the actual job, not a ballpark figure.
Q: Which countries do you cover?
Our most frequent routes are Spain, France, and Portugal. We also cover Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, and Ireland. Call us for any destination not listed and we will confirm availability.
Q: Can you move my car to Europe as well?
Yes. We offer car transportation alongside household removals. See our Car Transportation page for detail, or mention it when you call and we will include it in the survey.
